There are great options to choose from:

  • Fixed Skylights: Non-operable units designed solely to bring in natural light. They are typically less expensive than venting models and can be installed with various accessories and glass options.
  • Venting Skylights: These can be opened to provide fresh air and help regulate temperature. They come in manual, electric, and solar-powered options. They can be installed with various accessories and glass options.
  • Tubular Skylights (Light Tubes): These use a reflective tube to channel sunlight from the roof to a diffuser in the ceiling, ideal for smaller spaces or areas without direct roof access.
  • Roof Windows: Similar to venting skylights but often designed for installation in accessible roof spaces, functioning more like a window and therefore are very common in attic spaces with steep roof slopes.  They can be installed with various accessories and glass options.

Velux Skylights offer the following warranties:  https://www.veluxusa.com/help/velux-warranty

Manchester Skylight Specialist offer a 10 year workmanship warranty on all skylight installations.  That's 8 more years than the other guys!

Skylights can be installed on most common roof types, including asphalt shingles, metal, tile, and flat roofs. However, the products, installation techniques, and flashing requirements will vary depending on the roof material and pitch. Low-slope or flat roofs will require different skylight models and installation methods vs steep slope roofs to ensure proper drainage and prevent leaks. It's essential to choose a skylight compatible with your roof type.  Manchester Skylight Specialist can help you through the process of determining the best options for you.

Solar tubes, also known as light tubes or tubular daylighting devices, are a popular alternative for bringing natural light into interior spaces, particularly those without direct roof access.  See more at https://www.veluxusa.com/ready-to-buy/buying-guides/buying-guide-sun-tunnels

The cost of skylight installation can vary significantly based on several factors. These include the size and type of skylight (fixed or venting), the glazing options, any additional features like remote controls or rain sensors, the complexity of the installation (including roof access and structural modifications), and the labor costs in your area. It's recommended to get a detailed quote from a reputable skylight contractor to get an accurate estimate for your specific needs.

While it is possible for experienced do-it-yourselfers with roofing knowledge, professional installation is strongly recommended. Proper flashing and sealing are critical to prevent leaks, and incorrect installation can lead to costly repairs and potential water damage. Professionals have the expertise, tools, and knowledge of local building codes to ensure a secure and watertight installation.  When installing a Velux Skylight a certified installer will be able to ensure you receive their 10 year no leak guarantee.

Yes, skylights can contribute to energy savings in several ways. By maximizing natural daylight, you'll use less artificial lighting during the day. In colder months, south-facing skylights can provide passive solar heat gain, potentially reducing the need for your heating system. However, it's crucial to choose energy-efficient models with features like Low-E coatings and proper insulation to minimize heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.

While the potential for leaks exists with any roof penetration, it doesn't mean all skylights will inevitably leak. Proper installation, quality products, and regular roof maintenance will keep you leak free.  Regular inspection and maintenance can significantly reduce the risk of leaks on any area of your roof.  Velux offers a 10 yr no leak warranty on almost all of their products if you have them installed by a Velux certified installer and here at Manchester Skylight Specialist we warranty our work for 10 years as well!

Yes, the addition of well-designed and properly installed skylights can increase your home's appeal and perceived value to potential buyers. The benefits of natural light and ventilation are often highly desirable features. However, the impact on value can depend on the overall quality of the installation.

The lifespan of a skylight can vary depending on the quality of the materials, the installation, and the level of maintenance it receives. However, properly installed, well-maintained, high-quality skylights can often last for 15 to 30 years or even longer.

Not at all. Skylights typically require relatively minimal maintenance. We recommend annual cleaning of the interior and exterior glass to maintain optimal light transmission, inspection of the flashing and seals for any signs of damage or deterioration, and the clearing of any leaves or debris that may accumulate around the skylight, especially near drainage channels.

For the climate in New England, which experiences both hot summers and cold winters, double or triple-pane glass with Low-E (low-emissivity) coatings is highly recommended. Multiple panes with insulating gas in between provide better thermal insulation, reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Low-E coatings help to reflect infrared radiation, further enhancing energy efficiency and reducing UV exposure.

To clean your skylight, use a mild solution of soap and water with a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or abrasive scrubbing tools that could scratch the glass or damage the seals. For exterior cleaning, ensure you can safely access the skylight. If you have a venting skylight, be careful not to get water into the mechanical parts.

The appropriate size depends on the room's dimensions, the amount of natural light desired, and the room's function. A general guideline is that the total glazed area of windows and skylights should be around 5-15% of the room's floor area. Placement is crucial for maximizing light and minimizing unwanted heat gain. North-facing skylights offer consistent, diffused light, while south-facing ones provide more direct sunlight (and potential heat). Consider the sun's path throughout the day and any potential obstructions like trees. Consulting with a lighting designer or experienced skylight installer can be beneficial.  https://www-us-marketing-qa.velux.com/products/visualizer-app

Yes, many modern venting skylights offer optional features like built-in rain sensors that automatically close the skylight when moisture is detected. Some models also have programmable timers or can be integrated with smart home systems for automated operation. These features provide convenience and help protect your home from the elements.

Skylights, being penetrations in the roof, can potentially affect sound insulation. Single-pane glass skylights generally offer less sound insulation than a well-insulated roof. However, opting for double or triple-pane glazing can significantly improve sound dampening.

Yes, various privacy glass options are available for skylights, particularly for bathrooms or other areas where privacy is desired while still allowing natural light to enter. These options include frosted, etched, or patterned glass. Velux also offer blinds or shades integrated within the glazing unit for adjustable privacy.
